State averages from the MERIC Cost of Living Data Series, 2nd quarter 2026 (U.S. average = 100). Costs vary a lot between cities in the same state, and taxes are not included.

How the cost of living comparison works

The calculator uses the MERIC Cost of Living Data Series, which scores each state against a U.S. average of 100 using prices for housing, groceries, utilities, transportation, health care and other goods. To keep the same standard of living, your salary should change by the same ratio as the index. For example, moving from a state with an index of 90.8 to one with 140.3 means you would need about 55% more income.

The category lines show where the difference comes from. Housing usually varies the most between states.
